Today my office issued the following statement, which includes my comments:

Dr. James Zogby says, "Enough is enough!"

Washington D.C. - October 11, 2008 -We are disturbed by the degree to which 'Arab' has become the metaphorical mud to sling against your opponent. Last week, for example, the Republican Jewish Coalition released a document in which they use the term Pro-Arab as a pejorative accusation. For his part, Rush Limbaugh has joined in by declaring that Obama is in fact an Arab American. Then, last Friday, after a supporter called Senator Barak Obama "an Arab", Senator John McCain came to the defense of of his political opponent by saying, "No, ma'am. He's a decent family man and citizen..." From this we are left to infer that an Arab man is less then a "decent family man."

Dr. James Zogby, President of the Arab American Institute, says, "Enough is enough! From the beginning of this campaign there have been those who have used 'Muslim' and 'Arab' in an effort to smear Barack Obama. This exploitation of bigotry and the stoking of racist fires to forward an agenda is reprehensible. This is not only offensive to Arab Americans, but to all Americans. As any ethnic group who has ever been used to scare the electorate knows, this is a dangerous game that, tragically, can get innocent people hurt.

"And while we are pleased to see that the senator is trying to dispel rumors about Senator Obama, we feel the need to point out that Arab Americans are also decent men and women with full rights of citizenship as enumerated under the Constitution. Arab Americans are part of the great melting pot that is this country's strength. We work towards peace in the Middle East along side our Jewish partners. We raise our sons and daughters to be model citizens of this nation. We serve this country with honor. The suggestion that any ethnic group is treacherous and Anti-American is unacceptable, dangerous, and unbecoming of such a great nation."

Thanks for posting this. I did think it was strange that McCain would refute the "Arab" accusation by saying that Obama's a decent family man, as if Arabs automatically are not.

Just thought I should note, that even on this website, where a number of very smart and open-minded people post all the time, when the topic on McCain defending Obama was opened, almost no one thought to point out that when told "[Obama] is an Arab" McCain said , NO, HE IS A DECENT MAN!!!!!!

This is a lot more dangerous than we all like to believe.

It's not even a charge that makes sense. He's not an Arab, doesn't have any Arab background as far as I can tell, and isn't (no matter how much certain people want to believe otherwise) even a Muslim.

Thanks for posting. I also noted that McCain's defense implied that being an Arab and a family man are mutually exclusive. I notice that some people have such subconscious negative mental associations with Arabs that they are completely unaware that defending Obama as non-Arab or non-Muslim could be offensive.

thanks for posting this, zeze....everything you say here is so true and you are so right that this is a lot more dangerous than we commonly believe it to be.

Thank you for posting this, I hope that we can open a dialogue about this in our country and dispel all the negativity and myths about being Arab, or Muslim or from any Middle Eastern country as somehow being "bad."

"This is not only offensive to Arab Americans, but to all Americans. As any ethnic group who has ever been used to scare the electorate knows, this is a dangerous game that, tragically, can get innocent people hurt."

""This is not only offensive to Arab Americans, but to all Americans. As any ethnic group who has ever been used to scare the electorate knows, this is a dangerous game that, tragically, can get innocent people hurt.""

That is EXACTLY the point that so many miss. Thank you.

This reflects badly on Americans in general rather than one single group - it shows hypocrisy in out message of equality, liberty, and justice. And now, when we need to reaffirm those things more than ever we have "joe-six-pack-patriots" claiming to be scared because Obama is an Arab.

I'm trying to be a lot more vocal about this, no matter what group is being attacked by ignorant and/or hateful people - because I think more highly of my country then let these bigots reshape what the country stands for - I want to be proud of America and I can't be if these few become the majority because of a silent majority. Ignoring bigots and writing them off as lunatics will not work is seems, and I am sure you guys will not!
